New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: With the latest increase of 9,887 positive COVID-19 cases recorded in last 24 hours, India has now overtaken Italy to become the sixth worst affected nation across the world after the total number of coronavirus cases in the country crossed 2.36 lakh-mark. The death toll in the country also surpassed 6,600-mark to reach 6,642.  

India has witnessed an increase of 30.5 per cent in the coronavirus cases during the past one week. India had crossed China, where the virus emerged late last year, in terms of cases for the ninth spot just a week ago.

On Saturday, India surpassed Italy, which has 2,34,531 cases, while the cases in India reached 2,36,657. With this, India is now behind USA, Brazil, Russia, UK and Spain in terms of positive coronavirus cases.

USA remains to be the worst affected nation with 19,65,708 cases and 1,11,390 deaths, while Brazil with 646,006 cases and 35,047 deaths is on the second spot. Russia with 449,834 cases and 5,528 deaths is the third worst hit nation, while Spain and United Kingdom (UK) with 288,058 and 283,311 cass are on the fourth and fifth spot respectively.

India crossed the 1-lakh mark on May 19, 111 days after first case was reported in the country on January 30. On June 3, the country’s total COVID-19 toll crossed the 2 lakh-mark, with the last 1 lakh-cases recorded in just 15 days.

The worrying figures come days after the Home Ministry (MHA) eased several restrictions under "Unlock 1.0" and extended lockdown in containment zones till June 30. Amid rising cases, several states like West Bengal, Maharashtra has extended the lockdown further.
