Coronavirus India News
Following the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, India has slowly started to recover as the active cases in the country has reduced to 1.07 lakh. The vaccination drive, which was launched in India in 2021 following a nod to Serum Institute's Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin on January 16, has also gained pace and more than 121 crore doses have been administered so far.
However, a new variant, named 'Omicron', by the World Health Organization (WHO) has caused concerns across the globe. The variant, first detected in southern Africa, has been classified as a 'variant of concern'. The classification puts Omicron into the most-troubling category of Covid-19 variants, along with the globally-dominant Delta, plus its weaker rivals Alpha, Beta and Gamma.
