Comedian Agrima Joshua receives ‘rape threats’, #ArrestShubhamMishra trends on Twitter; YouTuber arrested
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The video clip of a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua from a gig she hosted in 2019 has aggravated many social media users to an extent that it Joshua has been at the receiving end of rape threats, abuses for the past few days.
A year later, that same clip went viral on social media and drew criticism and backlash from many users who started abusing and threatening her for disrespecting Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji. She had been widely blamed and abused in graphic detail by Gujarat—based influencer Shubham Mishra. The joke which was based out of the answers which the comedian discovered on Quora did not go down well with many.
The youtube influencer Shubham Mishra, in a video that he posted on his handle, hurled the vilest of abuses threatening not only Agrima Joshua but also harming her mother and sister. He, later on, deleted the video from his account but ultimately put up a video on his youtube channel with a justification of why he hurled abuses at the comedian.
The deleted video had gone viral on social media inciting many users demanding action against the influencer for calling out the comedian in such a degrading manner.
After various complaints surfaced online against the abuser and the issue blew up the social media, the Vadodara Police took a call on the matter and said it has taken a suo moto action in the matter and detained Shubham Mishra. Police said it has initiated a legal process for registration of FIR against him under the relevant section of IPC and IT act on Sunday.
"Vadodara City Police took suo moto action in respect of an abusive, threatening video which was uploaded and shared on Social media by Shubham Mishra. We have detained him and initiated the legal process for registration of FIR against him under the relevant section of IPC and IT act," Vadodara Police said in a tweet.
This comes after The National Commission for Women (NCW) wrote to the chief of Gujarat Police, seeking action against the accused.
In the letter to Gujarat Police, the NCW said it has been tagged in a video posted on Twitter in which the man can be seen hurling abuses and giving rape threats to the woman.
While seated inside a car, the social media influencer lashed out abusive slurs fearlessly n the most graphic detail at the comedian and her mother and sister. Notably, the irony is that he ends the video by concluding that he respects women.
Soon after it went viral, #ArrestShubhamMishra started trending on Twitter. The vile act took the social media with a storm and the incensed many celebrities who urged the Mumbai and Gujarat Police as well as the National Commission for Women to take strict action against him. The issue was highlighted by many netizens who also demanded legal action to be taken against the famous influencer.
In the video clip from the 26-year-old comedian’s performance, she spoke about Chhatrapati Shivaji's upcoming statue in Maharashtra and joked about few reactions she had noted on Q&A website Quora. The comedian in her performance after sharing the reactions she had discovered on Quora, said that Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue will have GPS tracker and will shoot laser rays out of its eyes to kill Pakistani terrorists in the Arabian Sea.
As aggression and threats against the female comedian started growing from abusers, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a tweet asked police to take legal action against the comedian and urged everyone to maintain calm, saying that the law will take its course.
Following this particular sketch of Joshua's performance which happened in April last year at Mumbai’s Khar cafe, the members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) allegedly barged into the café on Saturday and vandalised property and enraged social media users also started sharing the details of cafe’s employees.
The comedian, however, had taken down the section from her youtube video which sparked controversy and also apologised for hurting the sentiments of the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a video she posted on Twitter.
