Mumbai | Jagran News Desk: After Ashok Chavan and Jitendra Awhad, another Cabinet minister of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government has tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus, reported news agency PTI.

According to reports, five of the staff members of the Cabinet minister have also tested positive for the novel virus. The reports said that all the six persons, including the Cabinet minister, were asymptomatic. The Cabinet minister, along with the five staff members, have been isolated and are reported to be in stable condition.

This is the third case when a Maharashtra Cabinet minister has tested positive for the dreadful coronavirus. Earlier, senior Congress leader and former state chief minister Ashok Chavan has tested for the novel infection. After Chavan, Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad had also tested positive for coronavirus. However, Awhad was cured and discharged from hospital after a month.

Maharashtra continues to the worst-hit state in India by the dreadful coronavirus. According to the latest information available at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra has reported over 97,600 coronavirus cases while more than 3,500 have succumbed to the infection.

As per the latest data, there are 47,980 active COVID-19 cases in the state while 46,078 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

Looking at the alarming spike in the number of coronavirus cases, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has warned that the lockdown can be extended in the state if people do not follow social distancing norms. 

He has also said that the state government has succeeded in setting up adequate number of health care facilities for treatment of COVID-19 patients in a short span.

"During the initial stage of the COVID-19 outbreak, the health care infrastructure in the state was not adequate. But we have now succeeded in developing enough number of facilities," he had said.
