New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: In a shocking incident, at least eight Uttar Pradesh police personnel were killed and 7 others were injured in an encounter with criminals in Kanpur on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The deceased police personnel also included a deputy superintendent of police.

In a separate encounter, police killed two unidentified criminals. Inspector-General of Police, Kanpur, Mohit Agarwal said, "Two unidentified criminals have been killed in a separate encounter and a pistol, which was taken away by criminals from policemen in earlier encounter, was recovered."

According to the police, the encounter started when the police team reached Dikru village under Chaubeypur police station late Thursday night, to arrest history-sheeter Vikas Dubey, who is facing 60 criminal cases.

Soon after the police team reached the hideout of the dreaded criminal, a hail of bullets was showered on them from a building rooftop, leaving Deputy SP Devendra Mishra, three sub-inspectors and four constables dead, officials said.

"The intention was to arrest him. There was an ambush. The firing by criminals was from three sides and it was planned," said Dinesh Kumar, Kanpur's police chief.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, H C Awasthi, as quoted by news agency PTI said that the notorious criminal might have got an inkling of the impending raid. He also said that Vikas, along with his henchmen put up massive roadblocks to prevent the police personnel from proceeding towards their hideout.

As the police team was caught unawares, the criminals fired at them from a building rooftop leading to the deaths, Awasthi added. He also said that a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Vikas Dubey and the police are searching the nearby areas for him as he and his henchmen managed to escape the spot taking advantage of the dark.

On getting information about the incident, Additional DG (Law and Order), IG (Kanpur) and the senior SP of Kanpur rushed to the spot, where a forensic team has started investigations. The forensic team will be joined by another team from Lucknow.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police has also been pressed into action, the DGP said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tributes to the slain policemen and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to their family members.

According to a spokesperson, he directed the police chief to take stringent action against the culprits and collect the detailed report from the spot immediately.

Besides Dy SP Devendra Mishra who was posted as Circle officer in Bilhaur, others killed in the encounter include Sub Inspector Mahesh Chandra Yadav, Sub Inspector Anup Kumar Singh, Sub Inspector Nebu Lal, constables Jitendra Pal, Sultan Singh, Bablu Kumar and Rahul Kumar, police said.
