Kanpur | Jagran News Desk: In a shocking incident, at least 57 girls living at a government child shelter home in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur have tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus.

What is even more shocking being that five of the girls – including two minors – were found pregnant, sparking a controversy. One of the five girls was also HIV positive. The 57 girls have now been shifted to a COVID-19 hospital and a medical examination is being done of the two minor girls who were found to be pregnant.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has attacked the Yogi Adityanath-led government over the reports about two girls being found pregnant and said that it shows that “facts were being suppressed in the name of investigations at such facilities”.

In a Facebook post, Gandhi said that the condition in government shelter homes is “inhuman” and demanded strict action against the officials. “The entire story of the Muzaffarpur shelter home case is in front of the country. Such a case had also come to light in Deoria in UP,” she said in her Facebook post.

“The case at the shelter home in Muzaffarpur (Bihar) is in front of the country. A similar case also emerged in UP’s Deoria. So, for another such case to emerge shows that in the name of probes, everything is suppressed. But there are many inhuman incidents happening at state-run child shelter homes,” she added.

However, Kanpur District Magistrate Dr Brahmdev Tiwari has issued a clarification, saying that the five girls were found pregnant before they were admitted to the shelter home in December last year.

“57 girls have tested positive for Covid-19, which includes five girls found to be pregnant. This includes two minors and one HIV positive patient. They were sent by the Child Welfare Committees from Agra, Etah, Kannauj, Firozabad, Kanpur and were pregnant before they came to the shelter home. These are the cases under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences [POCSO] Act. Two other girls who were tested negative are also pregnant. They were also sent by the CWC team of Kanpur,” he was quoted as saying by India Today

Meanwhile, the local administration has sealed the shelter home that is located in the city’s Swaroop Nagar and has quarantined the staff.

The novel coronavirus has been surging at an alarming rate in the country. Uttar Pradesh is the fifth worst-hit state in the country. The deadly virus has affected more than 16,500 and claimed the lives of over 500 in UP so far while nearly 10,000 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.
