3,390 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours take India's tally past 56,000; death toll climbs to 1,886
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: With a surge of 3,390 new coronvirus cases in the last 24 hours, India's tally has reached 56,342, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare while adding that the death toll has climbed to 1,886.
As per the Health Ministry, there are 37,916 active coronavirus cases in India while 16,539 people have been cured from the dreadful infection and discharged from hospitals.
The number of cases in Maharashtra, which is the worst-hit state in India, has increased to 17,974 while the death toll in the state has climbed to 694. In Gujarat, the tally has crossed the 7,000-mark with 425 deaths while over 3,200 people have been affected in Madhya Pradesh and the death toll has climbed to 193. Delhi, the national capital, has reported over 5,900 COVID-19 cases while the death toll has increased to 66 in the city-state.

The number of coronavirus cases in India are surging at an alarming rate. On Thursday, the Centre said that a significant number of health workers and security personnel, who are among the 'frontline warriors' in the COVID-19 fight, have tested positive for the deadly virus in the recent days.
In Maharashtra alone, at least 531 police personnel, including 51 officers and 480 constables, have tested positive, an official said. Of this, 39 have recovered and five policemen have died. Delhi also has reported more than 30 police personnel having tested positive, while one head constable died due to COVID-19 on Tuesday evening.
