3 killed, 7 missing after cloud burst in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: At least three people were killed and few others feared dead after cloud burst in Madkot area of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district. District Magistrate Pithoragarh VK Jogdande said that while 3 bodies have been recovered, eight people from a nearby village were still missing.
"Three people in the Madkot village lost their lives while 8 people from a neighbouring village are missing following a cloud burst. A rescue team is present at the spot," District Magistrate Pithoragarh V K Jogdande was quoted as saying by ANI.
The sudden cloud burst triggered a flash flood in the Madkot village and three people were swept. Their bodies were recovered later by rescue teams. One of the missing person has been found while the search and rescue operation for the remaining villagers are underway.
"One person has been found while search for 7 others is underway. The weather is not favourable to the teams that are undertaking relief and rescue operation causing delay in the work. Talks to dispatch a team of National Disaster Response Force underway, Sanjay Gunjyal, IG SDRF was quoted as saying by ANI.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Rawat has instructed Pithoragarh District Magistrate that there should not be any laxity in relief & rescue work, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said.
Heavy rains have been wreaking havoc in Uttarkhand over the last few days. Earlier last week, a road connecting Munsiyari, Darkot, Madkot village to Pithoragarh washed away due to heavy rains. The road was also used by villages along the China border.
On Saturday, Badrinath Highway was closed for traffic at several places following a landslide. The highway was closed at Pagalnala, Bhanerpani and Totaghati. District administration later cleared the road of debries.
