Veteran actor-comedian Jagdeep, 'Soorma Bhopali' of Sholay, passes away at 81
New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: Veteran Bollywood actor and famous comedian Jagdeep passed away on Wednesday. He was 81 years old. The reason of the demise is yet to be ascertained.
Jagdeep's real name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri who is father of Bollywood actor Jaaved Jaaferi and TV director Naved Jaffrey.
The veteran actor played the memorable character 'Soorma Bhopali' in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay. He is also remembered for his performance in the comedy film Andaz Apna Apna, where he played Salman Khan’s father Bankelal.
Jagdeep started his career as a child artiste in director BR Chopra's 1951 film Afsana. He also featured in films like Do Bigha Zamin, KA Abbas’ Munna and Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar. He has worked in over 300 films in a career spanning in over six decades.
Later, he established himself as a comic actor in the film Brahmachari starring Shammi Kapoor in 1968. Later, he also directed a film titled Soorma Bhopali, in which he played the lead role.
Jagdeep also excelled in a couple of horror films in which his presence was acknowledged by the fans, especially the Ramsay Brothers' films such as Purana Mandir and Saamri.
Actor Ajay Devgn expressed grief on the death of the veteran actor. "Heard the sad news of Jagdeep Saab’s demise. Always enjoyed watching him on screen. He brought so much joy to the audience. My deepest condolences to Jaaved and all members of the family. Prayers for Jagdeep Saab’s soul," he tweeted.

On the work front, Jagdeep was last seen in 'Gali Gali Chor Hai' starring Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran and Mugdha Godse in 2012.
The year 2020 has witnessed the deaths of several renowned actors, including Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor, who passed away in April this year. Irrfan lost to life after a two-year-long fight with neuroendocrine tumour on April 29 while Rishi Kapoor passed away after a two-year fight against Leukaemia.
