Irrfan Khan's last rites performed at Mumbai's Versova cemetery in presence of immediate relatives and friends
New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: The last rites of actor Irrfan Khan were performed at the Versova cemetery in Mumbai at around 3 pm on Wednesday. Due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, only a few people including his wife Sutapa Sikdar, sons Babil and Ayan, and some close relatives and friends were present at the funeral.
In a statement, the actor's representative said, "He was buried at the Versova kabristan in Mumbai at 3 pm this afternoon soon after the news of his passing away was announced. We pray for his peace and we hope he is in a better place today. He was strong in his fight, and we all have to be strong too in this loss."
The internationally renowned actor passed away at Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital on Wednesday while battling rare cancer. From Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned at his loss.
The 53-year-old was last seen on screen in 'Angrezi Medium'. In the flick, he had played the role of a sweet shop owner and single father set to fulfill his daughter's dream to study in London. He was not a part of the film's promotions owing to his ill health. The film ran in theatres for just a day due to the nationwide lockdown imposed due to coronavirus outbreak.
With critically acclaimed films like 'Paan Singh Tomar' and 'The Lunchbox' to his credit, Irrfan was regarded as one of the finest actors in Hindi cinema.
Irrfan won best actor National Award for his performance in 2012's biographical drama “Paan Singh Tomar”. Besides this, he has also featured in Hollywood movies like 'The Life of Pi', 'The Amazing Spiderman', 'Inferno', etc.
The actor was honoured with Padma Shri in 2011.
