The assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, slated to be held in seven phases from February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27 and March 3 and 7, are going to be a litmus test for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Thanks to the 'Modi wave', the saffron party had swept the 2017 polls and returned to power in Uttar Pradesh after over 18 years with a thumping majority of 312 seats. However, it would be interesting to see whether the BJP - under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath - would be able to repeat its performance or not as it is expected to face a stiff challenge from Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party. Besides Samajwadi Party, a revitalised Congress under Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) would also look to turn the tide in their favour by beating the BJP in its own backyard.
