New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The Congress on Sunday released the first list of 51 candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections.

According to the list, Ashok Chavan will contest from Boker, Nitin Raut will contest from Nagpur North, Pariniti Shinde will contest from Solapur Central, Vishwajeet Patangrao Kadam will contest from Palus-Kadegaon while Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh to contest from Latur City.

The list also has Congress Legislative Party leader KC Padavi’s name among the candidates who need to file their nominations before October 4.

This comes after the Congress Central Election Committee's meeting on Thursday which selected the candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls and finalised nominees in about 100 constituencies.

After the CEC meeting, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Balasaheb Thorat told reporters that the names for 45 seats sent by the screening committee were discussed and 32 were approved.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra will be held on 21 October while the results of the elections will be declared on 24 October. The term of the present Maharashtra Assembly expires on 9 November.

The upcoming elections will be a big test for the Congress especially after the drubbing it got in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

The Congress will fight the state elections along with Sharad Pawar's NCP. Of the 288 Assembly seats in Maharashtra, the two parties have decided to contest 125 each, leaving the rest for smaller allies.

In the 2014 state Assembly Elections, the Congress had won 42 seats while the NCP had won 41 seats.
