Maharashtra Assembly Election 2019

Maharashtra went to polls on October 21 and the results of the elections were declared on October 24. In the 288-member Assembly, the BJP won 105 seats, while ally Sena bagged 56. The NCP bagged 54 seats and the Congress emerged victorious in 44 seats. The political twist and turns in the state started when Shiv Sena parted ways with its 30-year-old ally leaving them below the majority mark to form the government. However, the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP acted smartly and invited NCP leader Ajit Pawar to extend his support along with 56 MLAs of NCP and took oath as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively. But the political dynamics in Maharashtra changed after Ajit Pawar’s uncle and veteran politician Sharad Pawar took control of the situation and acted as a bridge between the Congress and the Shiv Sena, the ideological opposites, to shake hands and support each other in forming the government. After less than 80-hours of taking the oath as CM, Devendra Fadnavis had to tender his resignation along with Ajit Pawar, who resigned citing personal reasons. The resignations paved way for Sena-Congress-NCP (Maha Vikas Aghadi) to form the government in the state, with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray as the CM. Uddhav Thackeray took oath as the CM on December 1 and became the first Thackeray to be sworn-in as a Chief Minister.
