Jharkhand Election Results: Hemant Soren, son of a three-time CM, who now leads Jharkhand
Ranchi | Jagran News Desk: JMM leader Hemant Soren took the reins of the state as chief minister on Sunday, a week after a three-party coalition, led by him, swept the assembly polls, bagging 47 seats in the 81-member Assembly.
Soren, who is the son of JMM founder and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shibu Soren, had contested from two seats, Dumka and Barhait. In Dumka, he was up against BJP’s Louis Marandi while in Barhait his main opponent was Simon Malto of the saffron party.
He had earlier served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2013 with support from the Congress and the RJD after President’s rule was removed from the state. He had also served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand under the Arjun Munda ministry.
Soren is known to be a tough bargainer. Just before the recent assembly elections, Soren had successfully engineered the return of Hidayatullah Khan from Congress and strengthened the position of his party in the state. The JMM leader had also challenged his rivals to try and penetrate his party’s tribal bastion, which he considers impenetrable.
Soren’s political career started in December 2009 when he became a member of the Rajya Sabha. The very next year, Soren became the deputy Chief Minister of the state in the Arjun Munda cabinet. He served on that position till 2013. Then on July 13, 2013, he became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
However, in the 2014 Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the state bringing an end to Soren’s term as CM. The JMM, in 2014 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, had 19 seats and thus Soren became the leader of the opposition in Jharkhand.
As the leader of opposition, Soren heavily criticised the ‘Global Investors Summit in 2017’ in Jharkhand and called it “maha chintan shivir of land grabbers”. The JMM leader also claimed that it was being organised to loot the tribals of the state.
He also supported the ban of liquor in Jharkhand and said that women organisations in the world have to come forward to launch a struggle against government’s liquor campaign.
Then an alliance deal between the JMM and the Congress sealed the latter announced that Soren will be the CM face of the alliance and now he set to become the Chief Minister of the state once again.
