Haryana Assembly Elections 2019: Congress furious over Khattar's 'mari hui chuhiya' comment on Sonia Gandhi
Chandigarh | Jagran News Desk: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday made a snide remark at Sonia Gandhi’s return as interim president of Congress. Using a Hindi proverb, Khattar downplayed the appointment of Sonia as the interim party chief after three months of search.
“After losing the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned as the Congress president and started saying that the party should get new president from outside Gandhi family,” ANI quoted Khattar as saying during an election rally.
“We thought this was good, to move away from nepotism (parivarvad)... But they spent three months moving around the country in search of a new party president. After three months who became the president? Sonia Gandhi. Khoda Pahar Nikli Chuiya, Vo Bhi Mari Hui. This is their condition,” he added.
Khattar’s remarks invoked sharp criticism from the Congress which said that it showed the “anti-women character” of the BJP.
“The comment made by the BJP's Chief Minister is not only cheap and objectionable, it also shows the anti-women character of the BJP. We condemn Chief Minister ML Khattar's remark and demand an immediate apology from him,” the Congress tweeted in Hindi.
The Congress faced leadership crisis after Rahul Gandhi resigned as the party chief, taking responsibility of the party's dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls. He had also ruled out his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the post, asserting that the party must look for a non-Gandhi leader.
After months of consultation, the party's top decision-making body, the Working Committee, asked Sonia Gandhi to take over as interim Congress president.
The BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has accused the Congress of practising dynastic politics for having several Nehru-Gandhis as the presidents of the party.
