Haryana Assembly Election 2019

The 2019 Assembly Election in Haryana saw high-voltage triangular contest between the Manohar Lala Khattar-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The 90-seat state Haryana assembly, along with Maharashtra, went on to polls on October 21 while the results were announced on October 24. The final voter turnout was recorded at 68.20 per cent. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the state and won 40 seats while the Congress, under the leadership of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, won 31 seats. The JJP emerged as the ‘kingmaker’ in the state, with around ten seats while the Abhay Singh Chautala-led INLD won just a single seat in the state. The BJP, which fell short of six seats from the majority mark, formed the government in the state in a post-poll alliance with the JJP. Manohar Lal Khattar and Dushyant Chautala were sworn in as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively of BJP-JJP alliance government. However, the results were different then what the exit polls had predicted. The exit polls had earlier predicted that the BJP would win around 67-68 seats in the 90-seat state assembly while the Congress would get 12-13 seats. In the 2014 assembly elections in Haryana, the BJP got a majority by winning 47 seats, ending the 10-year rule of the Congress government in the state and Manohar Lal Khattar became the Chief Minister.
