'We couldn't convince people': Gautam Gambhir congratulates Kejriwal as AAP looks set to retain Delhi
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: BJP leader Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday congratulated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as trends by the Election Commission showed the Aam Aadmi Party set for a resounding victory in the Delhi assembly elections to retain power for a third term.
"We accept Delhi election results and congratulate Arvind Kejriwal and the people of Delhi. We tried our best but, probably, we could not convince the people of the state. I hope Delhi develops under the chief ministership of Arvind Kejriwal," he said.
As votes for the February 8 elections were counted, the AAP was leading in 58 of 70 seats and the BJP in 12, leaving the Congress virtually decimated in a city it had ruled for three consecutive terms under Sheila Dikshit, according to Election Commission figures.
Apart from Gambhir, several other BJP leaders, including BJP President JP Nadda, also congratulated Arvind Kejriwal after it became clear that the Aam Aadmi Party will retain power in the city-state.
BJP President JP Nadda said that his party accepts the mandate given by the people of Delhi and it will play the role of a constructive opposition.
Congratulating Arvind Kejriwal and AAP for their victory in the Delhi assembly election, Nadda said in a series of tweets that the BJP hopes the AAP government will work for the overall development of the national capital.
He also expressed gratitude towards BJP workers, saying they worked day and night for the party's victory.
"BJP accepts the mandate of the people. We will play our role as a constructive opposition and raise public issues in the assembly. I congratulate Arvind Kejriwal, his party and hope that his government will work for the development of the state," Nadda tweeted.
