'Hope you'll fulfill people's aspirations': PM Modi congratulates Kejriwal as AAP sweeps Delhi to retain power for third time
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Arvind Kejriwal after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept the Delhi polls to retain power in the city-state for the third time.
In a tweet, PM Modi wished the AAP chief and expressed hope that he will fulfill the "aspirations" of the people of the national capital.
"Congratulations to AAP and Shri Arvind Kejriwal Ji for the victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections. Wishing them the very best in fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Delhi," PM Modi said in a tweet.
The results of the much-awaited Delhi Assembly Elections were declared on Tuesday and AAP retained power in the city-state for the third time. The results fall in line with the exit poll results which had earlier predicted that the AAP will retain power in the national capital.
As per the latest Election Commission trends, the AAP has won 46 seats while it is leading on five seats. The BJP, meanwhile, has won five seats while it is leading on three seats. The Congress, on the other hand, was once again decimated after it failed to win even a single seat.
The AAP's stupendous victory comes nearly eight months after it suffered a severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which the party drew a blank while the BJP won all the seven seats.
The elections in the national capital took place in the midst of massive protests in the city and elsewhere over the new citizenship law, an issue which was strongly raised by the BJP top leadership during the campaigning which often turned bitter and vitriolic.
In the 2015 Assembly Elections, the AAP had also registered a stupendeous victory and won a 67 off 70 seats in the state. The remaining three seats were won the BJP while the Congress had failed to open its account.
