New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The Congress on Tuesday accepted its defeat after it became clear that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, will retain power in Delhi.

In a statement, the Congress alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to polarise the assembly polls and were successful to some extent.

“People’s mandate is against us, we accept it. We have resolved to revive and rebuild the party. Attempts to polarise were made by both parties (BJP and AAP) and they were successful to an extent,” said Congress’ spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said at a press conference.

Surjewala also made a staunching attack at the BJP, saying the poll results also had a message for the saffron party that the ‘most toxic campaign’ unleashed by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah has been defeated.

Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra, who was also present at the press conference, said that the results also showed that the people of Delhi were not with the communal forces.

Earlier in the day, Congress’ Alka Lamba also made a similar attack at the BJP and the Congress, saying that the votes between Hindus and Muslims were ‘completely polarised’.

“I accept the result, but don't give up. Hindu-Muslim votes were completely polarised. The Congress Party will now have to prepare for a new fight with new faces and a long struggle for the people of Delhi. If you fight today, you will also win tomorrow,” she said in a tweet in Hindi.

The results for the Delhi Assembly Elections were released on Tuesday and the AAP made clean sweep at the national capital. The official trends by the Election Commission (EC) suggest that the Kejriwal-led party will win around 58 seats while the BJP will be a distant second with 12 seats. The Congress would once again find it difficult to open its account.
