Sunil Gavaskar reveals why Virat Kohli is considered as 'no. 1' batsman in cricket
New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: The never-ending comparisons so as to ascertain the best batsman of international cricket has got a new lease of assertion from one of India’s finest batsman of all-time, Sunil Gavaskar, who put forth Virat Kohli in the same league of batsmen as Sir Vivian Richards, saying that the current Indian captain Virat Kohli is considered as the number one player ‘because he bats exactly like Viv Richards.’
Speaking on a Star Sports’ talk show ‘Winning the Cup - 1983’, the former Indian captain said that it used to be really difficult to keep Sir Richards quiet on the crease, and Kohli’s batting style is also the same.
“It was very difficult to keep Viv Richards quiet when he was at the crease. Similarly, if you look at Virat Kohli’s batting today, in the same ball and same line, he will use his top hand and score a boundary towards the extra cover region and will use the bottom hand and score a boundary towards the mid-on and mid-wicket region,” said Gavaskar.
“That’s why Virat Kohli is considered as the No. 1 player because he bats exactly like Viv Richards. Earlier, Gundappa Vishwanath, VVS Laxman used to bat like this,” Gavaskar added.
Earlier, the former Australian captain Ian Chappel had said that Sir Vivian Richards was the ‘best short-form player in the time’ while adding that ‘Kohli’s the same.’
“He (Virat) plays traditional cricket shots, and he plays them really well,” Chappell had said.
Sir Vivian Richards has been considered as the greatest Caribbean cricketer of all time with him being the only West Indies’ captain who never lost a Test series. Sir Richards was part of the World Cup-winning team composition of West Indies in both 1975 and 1979 and played a crucial role in ensuring that his team lifts the trophy both the times.
