New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Former sports minister of Sri Lanka on Thursday alleged that his country “sold” the 2011 ICC World Cup to India, while reverberating one of the most shocking match-fixing claims.

According to Fox Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, then Sports Minister of the island nation, in a series of interviews given to Sri Lankan media alleged match-fixing in 2011 World Cup final and said, “I tell you today that we sold the 2011 World Cup finals,” Aluthgamage told Sirasa TV.

“Even when I was sports minister I believed this,” while adding that he ‘did not want to disclose the plot’ at that time. In 2011, we were to win, but we sold the match. I feel I can talk about it now. I am not connecting players, but some sections were involved,” said Mahindanada.

In another interview given to News1 channel, former Sports minister who is currently serving as Minister for Renewable Energy and Power in President Gotabaya Rajapaksha’s administration, said, “I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were definitely involved in fixing the game.”

Reacting to the allegations, former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, who captained the team into the finals of 2011 ICC World Cup said in an interview, that the former Sports Minister should also produce evidence to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit and request for an investigation into what he is claiming.

“Then no one needs to speculate and can get to the bottom of this. That should be the most prudent course of action,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by News1st.

This is not the first time that Mahindananda Aluthgamage has alleged that 2011 World Cup final was fixed. In 2017, Aluthgamage claimed that the report by managers after the match had explicitly said that a senior Sri Lankan player had smoked as many as over 50 cigarettes in the dressing room during the game, and the captain resigned immediately after the finale (precisely three days after the finale).

Back then in 2017, after both Aluthgamage and former captain Arjuna Ranatunga alleged foul play in 2011 World Cup final, then Sports Minister in Maithripala Sirisena’s administration, Dayasiri Jayasekera, had said that if anyone files a formal complaint in the matter, he will initiate the probe into the matter. but neither a complaint was filed nor any probe was ordered.
