New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Veteran Indian opener Virendra Sehwag has backed young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant and said that the Delhi lad is the best person to replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

In an interview with Times of India, Sehwag said Pant is the best option to replace Dhoni.

“I think Rishabh Pant is the best one (option). He proved himself in Test Cricket and now he may prove himself in ODIs and T20Is again. He is the best guy to replace MS Dhoni,” Sehwag told the Times of India in an interview.

“He (Pant) will take some time. If he corrects his shot selection, he will serve Team India for a long time,” Sehwag said.

“I am sure in the coming three or fours years, you will see Pant opening for the team. He has the capability to open the innings in the limited-overs format,” said Sehwag.

MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket in 2014. After his retirement, it looked like Wriddhiman Saha would replace him but consistent injuries kept Saha out of the team. In his absence, Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik were given the chance but they too failed to impress the selectors.

Soon Rishabh Pant was handed a Test debut in England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and so far has played nine tests and scored 696 runs in 15 innings at an average of 49.71, including two centuries and two fifties.
