New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Opening batsman Rohit Sharma on Wednesday reached past former India skipper MS Dhoni to hit the most number of sixes in international cricket held in the country. Rohit now has 187 plus sixes (in 116 innings) to his name as compared to MS Dhoni 186 in 208 innings. He reached the feat by scoring his third six in the second ODI against West Indies held at Vishakhapatnam on December 18.

Rohit Sharma, who scored 159 runs (comprising five sixes and 17 fours) -- his 28th ODI ton-- before getting caught behind to Shai Hope off Sheldon Cottrell in the 44th over. The 32-year-old also slammed the most number of sixes (77) in ODIs in a calendar year for the Men in Blues--breaking his previous record of hitting 74 sixes. Besides this, Rohit has been scoring the maximum amount of runs in the ODI match each year for India since 2013.

He was well guided by his opening partner KL Rahul (102 runs), who slammed his fifth hundred. The 27-year-old played 104 balls and smashed six sixes and eight fours. The duo shared a partnership of 227 runs for the first wicket as India plundered West Indies bowling attack. A late blitz from Shreyas Iyer (53 runs off 32 balls) and Rishabh Pant (39 runs off 16 deliveries), helped India post 387/5 in 50 overs. Sheldon Cottrell was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies, he scalped two wickets while skipper Kieron Pollard, Alzarri Joseph and Keemo Paul picked one wicket each. 

 

In reply, West Indies got bowled out for 280 runs. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran scored 78 and 75 runs respectively. For India, Kuldeep Yadav picked a hat-trick while Shami ended up with three wickets.

 

The ODI series decider will be held at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on December 24 (Sunday).
