India vs South Africa: Rohit Sharma slams maiden double hundred in Tests, completes 500-plus runs in series
Ranchi | Jagran Sports Desk: Rohit Sharma on Sunday scored his maiden double hundred in Tests in the third Test against South Africa at the JSCA stadium in Ranchi.
Rohit, who resumed his innings at his overnight score of 117, took just 249 balls to reach his maiden Test double ton.
This has been a dream series for Rohit. The star Indian batsman, who was promoted to open the innings in Tests, has scored more than 500 runs in the series at an average of more than 170. He has become only the fifth Indian opener after Vinoo Mankad, Budhi Kunderan, Sunil Gavaskar and the birthday boy Virender Sehwag to score 500-plus runs in a single Test series.
He also became only the second Indian opener to score three or more centuries in a Test series. Sunil Gavaskar was the only previous Indian to do so, in three different series.
On Saturday, he also broke the record of scoring the most number of sixes in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship. The 32-year-old went past Ben Stokes, who had registered 13 sixes in the recently concluded Ashes Test series.
Sharma also broke the record for registering the most number of sixes in a bilateral Test series. He went past West Indies' batsman Shimron Hetmyer who had registered 15 sixes in the series against Bangladesh in 2018/19. Before Hetmyer's record, spinner Harbhajan Singh held the record as he hit 14 sixes in the series against New Zealand in 2010/11.
In the third and final Test, India won the toss and elected to bat first against South Africa. Virat Kohli-led side handed the debut cap to Shahbaz Nadeem. On the other hand, Proteas skipper announced that Quinton de Kock would be opening the batting for the side in place of Aiden Markram.
