ICC Test Rankings: India loses top spot to Australia for first time since 2016
New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: The annual update of data by the (ICC) International Cricket Council on Friday led to the drop of India’s ICC Test Rankings from the top to number three. Australian Cricket Team has succeeded India as the World’s new number one Test Cricket Team.
India lost the top spot for the first time since October 2016, but even now, the Virat Kohli-led test squad continues to lead the ICC World Test Championship, an International lead constituted by top nine teams of World Test Cricket, in which each team has to play six test series in total.
India’s record in 2016-17 was exceptionally phenomenal – as the team had won all the five sries during that period including the ones against Australia and South Africa. However, the Australian side had lost to South Africa as well to India during the same corresponding period.
India lost the number one spot because in the latest revisions of the ICC rankings data, the record of 12 test victories and just one loss from 2016-17 period was taken out of its ranking database.
India was scheduled to play a 2 test-match long series against New Zealand in March 2020, and against Australia in December, 2020. But both the fixtures were cancelled due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in cancellation or postponement of almost every sporting event across the world, including the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Wimbledon, Champions League, several other football leagues and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
