'21st century will be Indian century': Jeff Bezos promises to create 1 million new jobs in India
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: A day after the Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal snub Amazon Founder and CEO in a public event, Bezos on Friday announced that the e-commerce giant will create 10 lakh jobs in India by 2025 through continuous investments in infrastructure, technology and logistics.
Jeff Bezos also hailed the Indian democracy and its diversity and said that the 21sth century will be India's century. Hailing the Indian democracy, Bezos said, "I predict that the 21st century is going to be the Indian century... Apart from the dynamism it has, India is a democracy which is a major characteristic of the country." He also added that in terms of alliances, the 21st century would be about the bilateral relations between the US and India, reports IANS.
In a statement, the Amazon Founder said, "We are investing to create a million new jobs here in India over the next five years. We've seen huge contributions from our employees, extraordinary creativity from the small businesses we've partnered with, and great enthusiasm from the customers who shop with us, and we are excited about what lies ahead."
The new expected jobs are on top of the 700,000 jobs Amazon has already created in the country since 2013, the company said in a statement.
The announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a cold shoulder to the world's richest man with an estimated net worth of USD 117 billion by refusing to meet him.
On Thursday, Goyal had said that Bezos is not doing India a favour by investing a billion dollars and raised concerns that if its losses were a result of predatory pricing if Walmart and Amazon were gaining entry into multi-brand retail using loopholes.
On Wednesday, Bezos had announced Amazon's plan to invest USD 1 billion to bring 10 million traders and MSMEs across the country, enabling USd 10 billion in cumulative exports by 2025 and supporting India's economic diversification.
According to the company, the 1 million jobs will be across industries, including cloud computing, skill development, information technology, content creation, retail, logistics and manufacturing.
In last six years, Amazon has grown its employee base more than four times and last year inaugurated its new campus buildining in Hyderabad-- its first fully-owned 9.5 acre campus outside the US with around 15,000 employees.
Amazon said that it has expanded growth opportunities for more than 5,50,000 traders and MSMEs- including local shops - through initiatives like Karigar, Saheli and "I Have Space."
