1. Donald Trump Dials PM Narendra Modi, Congratulates Him For UP Victory

US President Donald Trump on Monday called up Prime Minister Narendra Modi and congratulated him on his recent electoral success, the White House said. Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that Trump congratulated PM Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on their electoral victories. The White House said the leaders spoke by phone.

2. Find Alternative To Pellet Guns In Kashmir, Supreme Court Tells Centre

The Supreme Court expressed concern over the pellet gun injuries suffered by minors who indulged in stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir and asked the Centre to consider other effective means to quell the protests as it concerns "life and death". It conceded that though the use of pellet guns by the security forces was not a judicial issue, it can intervene in the matter to find a solution acceptable to the parties concerned.

3. Monsoon To Be Below Normal This Year, Predicts Skymet

Monsoon will be below normal this year and western India is likely to experience a deficient rainfall, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, has said. El Nino - a phenomenon associated with warming of Pacific waters - is being attributed as one of the main reasons behind a possibly weak monsoon this year. Weather Risk, another private forecasting agency has predicted an El Nino event this year and said it is likely to have a negative impact on the southwest monsoon during the later part of the monsoon period.

4. Supreme Court Reserves Verdict On Appeals In Nirbhaya Gangrape Case

The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on appeals of four convicts against the conviction and award of death penalty in the December 16, 2012 gangrape and murder case that had shaken the entire nation's conscience. Besides dealing with the challenge to the conviction, the court is also deliberating on the issue of the quantum of sentence to the convicts as it has been alleged that the trial court did not separately consider "mitigating" circumstances of each convicts while sending them to the gallows.

5. No Market Manipulation, Have Strong Case Against Sebi Order: Reliance

With RIL shares taking a beating on Sebi's penal action, the company said on Monday it has a strong case against the regulatory order and there was no market manipulation by it on account of trades in cash and futures segments. Reliance Industries also reiterated to file an appeal against the Sebi order in the Reliance Petroleum case before the Securities Appellate Tribunal.

The offering box at the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara here today netted cash offerings to the tune of Rs 4.75 crore in new notes, the highest single day collections post demonetisation. "Since the announcement of demonetisation scheme, every day the hundi (offering box) had collected between Rs 2.5 and Rs 3 crore, besides offerings in gold and silver, from thousands of devotees across the country, who are undeterred by demonetisation," temple sources told PTI.

A "monster" cyclone made landfall in northeast Australia today, cutting power and uprooting trees as coastal towns went into lockdown in the face of lashing rain and howling winds. Great Barrier Reef islands popular with foreign tourists were pummeled by the category four storm which hit the Queensland state coast with destructive wind gusts of up to 270 kmph near its wide core.
